What Is a Preset Extractor?

A preset extractor is a tool that reverse-engineers the editing settings behind a photo and packages them as a reusable Lightroom preset. Instead of manually guessing which sliders to adjust (exposure, white balance, tone curve, HSL), a Lightroom preset extractor reads the data embedded in the image or uses AI to approximate it.

FindPreset does both. If your photo has EXIF/XMP metadata from Lightroom, we pull the exact settings. If it doesn't (screenshots, Instagram saves, exported JPEGs), our AI analyzes the color grading, contrast, and tonal characteristics to recreate the look automatically.

The Preset Ripper That Skips the Guesswork

Manually recreating someone's editing style means hours of slider tweaking and side-by-side comparisons. A preset ripper like FindPreset skips all of that. Upload the reference photo, download the XMP, import into Lightroom, done.

No need to buy expensive preset packs or reverse-engineer color grades by eye. Whether you're matching a client's existing style or studying how a photographer you admire edits, FindPreset gives you the starting point in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you create a preset from a photo in Lightroom?

Not directly within Lightroom itself. However, FindPreset analyzes your photos and automatically generates XMP preset files that capture the editing style. Simply upload any edited photo, and we'll create a preset you can import into Lightroom Classic or Mobile.

What file formats does FindPreset support?

FindPreset supports all common photo formats including JPG, JPEG, PNG, DNG, and HEIC. The tool works with any image that contains embedded Lightroom editing data (XMP metadata).

Do I need a Lightroom subscription to use FindPreset?

No! FindPreset works independently. You can extract and download XMP presets without having Lightroom installed. You'll only need Lightroom when you want to apply the preset to your own photos.

How does the preset extraction work?

Our system automatically detects image characteristics including color grading, exposure, contrast, and other editing parameters. Based on this analysis, we generate a custom XMP preset file that matches the editing style of your uploaded photo.

Is my data safe?

Your original full-size photos are never kept: they are processed and discarded. We keep a reduced-size copy for up to 90 days so we can help with support questions and check extraction quality, then delete it. We never sell or share your images. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

What versions of Lightroom are compatible?

The XMP presets work with all versions of Adobe Lightroom including Lightroom Classic (subscription and perpetual license) and Lightroom Mobile.

Is FindPreset really free?

Exact preset extraction from photo metadata is completely free: no signup, no watermark, forever. AI extraction is a paid feature: unlock a single result for $2.99, or go Premium ($4.99/mo for 20 AI-extracted Lightroom presets, or $39.99/yr for 240).

Can I extract presets from Instagram or Pinterest photos?

Yes. Social media strips EXIF metadata during upload, but our AI analyzes the image to find the preset from the photo's visual characteristics: color temperature, tonal curve, saturation, and contrast. The results won't be 100% identical to the original edit, but they'll get you very close.

What's the difference between EXIF extraction and AI analysis?

With metadata, we extract the preset from the photo exactly. Every slider value, a 1:1 match. Without it, AI analyzes the image visually and approximates the settings. Think of it as exact extraction vs. intelligent recreation.

How accurate is the AI preset extraction?

With embedded metadata: 100% accurate, it's the exact settings. With AI: a close approximation that captures most of the look. Core tone settings such as exposure and contrast come out closest; highlights, shadows, saturation and white balance may need minor tweaking after import, and local edits are approximated.
